"The Husband" is the second episode of the second season of American version of "Secrets and Lies" and the twelfth episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

Eric Warner's shocking past transgression leads Detective Cornell to interrogate him, revealing the first of Kate's many secrets. Desperate to prove that his life with Kate wasn't just one big lie, Amanda helps him search for answers. Despite her strong objections, Eric wants to bring his new findings to Detective Cornell. However, once he sees an ex-girlfriend–one of his worst nightmares–with Cornell at the police station, his hopes of redirecting her investigation quickly fade.

Synopsis[]

The synopsis is written by Danielle Jackson, staff writer for Entertainment Weekly magazine.

When Detective Cornell uncovered a huge secret from Eric’s past at the end of the last episode, it was clear that any doubt she had of him being involved with Kate’s murder went straight out the window.

After the funeral, Eric, Amanda, and Detective Cornell head to the police station, where Eric is being held for questioning. Apparently he went to the roof on the night of Kate’s death because it was time for him to make his big speech at the party, and Kate was the one who had his flashcards. He thought he’d be able to find her on the roof but only managed to make it up there after she had already fallen. Since none of the investigators found any flashcards at the scene or in Kate’s purse, Detective Cornell isn’t buying it.

On to another important issue: the death of Steven Porter. According to Eric, Steven used to bully him when they went to school together. One day when Eric couldn’t take it anymore, he snapped and punched Steven, not knowing that he had a broken neck that went undetected by doctors.

Another important issue and our first *secret* of the night: Shortly before her death, Kate withdrew $100,000 from Eric’s savings account.

When Detective Cornell finally dismisses the family, Amanda takes the opportunity to take a small jab at her and briefly remind her of the (supposedly) innocent man she once sent to prison.

The next day, Eric heads to the post office on a mission to find the package that was sent to the P.O. box Kate never told him about. Unfortunately, Detective Cornell beats him to it and has already collected the package. When the two run into each other, Eric explains that two weeks prior to Kate’s murder, he saw her having dinner with her ex-boyfriend, a detail Detective Cornell seems to have already known.

Later that night at the office, John stops by and brings Eric the birth certificate for the baby Kate had. The certificate shows that Kate had a baby boy at 16 and gave him up for adoption. That’s one question answered. (For now, at least.)

While leaving, Eric hears his best bro, Neil (Eric Winter), getting beat up in the stairwell by a guy Neil claims to have never seen before. We find out that that’s not true at all when Detective Cornell shows the two of them a sketch of the attacker that Neil was hesitant to confirm.

NEXT: To trust or not to trust Cornell…[pagebreak]

Amanda shows up to Eric’s apartment (after he’s already torn it apart in the hopes of finding out more information about what exactly is going on here) and told him that if he wants to find anything Kate was hiding, he should look in the last place a man would think to look: the bathroom. And alas, once he scours the bathroom, he comes across a blackmail letter asking for $100,000, the exact amount of money that Kate withdrew from the bank. In a flashback, we find out that Eric had been being blackmailed for some time now. The first time was when an anonymous person threatening to reveal Eric’s juvenile record asked for $50,000 that Eric refused to pay despite Kate advising him to cough up the money. When he didn’t pay, the blackmailer decided that $50,000 wasn’t enough and upped the price tag.

Eric decides to take the ransom letter to the police station to give to Detective Cornell, but Amanda thinks it’s a bad idea — she’s afraid Cornell will use the letter against him. When Eric refuses to listen to her advice, she gives up her job as his defense attorney.

At the police station, John arrives to intercept Eric’s attempt to turn in the ransom note when a woman from Eric’s past shows up to talk to Detective Cornell. Instead of handing over the note, Eric leaves and lets John know that the woman talking to the detective might just give her some information that’ll work against him.

Shortly after leaving the office and confronting Neil, Eric makes his way to Kate’s assistant’s apartment. Once he gets there, he hears a bunch of clamoring behind the door and decides that maybe something fishy is happening here. But before he can walk away, the man who attacked Neil opens the door and finds Eric in the hallway. Sadly, we’ll have to wait two weeks for episode 3 to tell us how this encounter is going to end.

And we’ve ended another episode with questions:

  1. Who is the man that attacked Neil and what for?
  2. Who was the blackmailer?
  3. Who was the woman that Detective Cornell was questioning and why is Eric so afraid of what she might tell her?
