Career[]

Kate Dennis is a director of Network Ten, cable and premium cable television drama and comedy with pilots and episodes to her credit. Kate’s directing work includes Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Rake (series 2 & 3), Time of Our Lives, The Secret Life of Us, Twisted Tales, MDA and Rush, to name a few. Her first series was Bryan Brown’s Twisted Tales, followed by Big Sky which marked the beginning of her longstanding collaboration with Australia’s premier drama producer, John Edwards. Kate has also directed numerous pilots including Offspring (now in its fifth season), Secretary and the telemovie The Alice.

Whilst in London, she developed two features, co-wrote the thriller Superstition starring Charlotte Rampling and Mark Strong, and was lead director on the BBC/Tiger Aspect romantic comedy series Rescue Me. In addition, she recently wrapped on the highly anticipated suspense thriller Secrets and Lies about an everyday family man Ben (played by Martin Henderson) who finds the body of a young boy and becomes the prime suspect. As his world splits apart, Ben finds himself with no choice but to try and clear his name with his marriage, kids, reputation and sanity at stake. The show has been picked up as a 10 part series for ABC with the BAFTA and Emmy Award winning Hoodlum producing with Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Kate’s collaboration with Essential Media (Saving Mr Banks, US remake of Rake with Greg Kinnear for ABC) continues with her feature debut as director on Almost French, based on the novel by Sarah Turnbull.

Kate began her career in the camera department under awarded cinematographers John Seale and Andrew Lesnie, before moving to continuity for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and script supervisor on Cliffhanger and Babe. She shot second unit on Gregor Jordan’s war drama Buffalo Soldiers which starred Joaquin Phoenix.

In 2007, Kate was nominated for an Directors Guild Award for directing the episode, Cars Without Brakes, Love My Way. In 2013, she was nominated for her second ADG Award for her Rake episode, Greene.

Kate has given masterclasses for the Directors Guild and the Australian Film Television Radio School (whose alumni include Jane Campion and Gilliam Armstrong), and serves on the Film Victoria, Evaluation and Advisory Committee convened to consider applications for production investment providing recommendations to the Board for final approval.
